Changing cameras means that your photographs will change. A really good camera has something I suppose you might describe as its own distinctive aura.– Nobuyoshi ArakiI don’t think about what camera I should use that much. I just pick up the one that looks nicest on the day– William Eggleston Cameras are wonderful little contraptions. By making photographs, they are tools with which one can express their personal taste and private sensibilities. At the same time they physically exist as expressions of these same concepts. The relationship one has with their cameras affects their approach to making a picture.People who shoot film simply do because they choose to, and the Photo Culture of Tokyo is full of film camera users. When I meet them out on the streets I ask to photograph their camera, and usually post it here the same day. All of the photos were shot with a Ricoh GRDII. I trust that this irony is not lost on anyone. These photos are meant for sharing. By all means, re-blog away. Clicking on the images will present you with a version 1000 pixels wide to further enjoy.I also take other kinds of photographs as well.
TOKYO CIRCULATION is Shinya Arimoto’s latest photobook- nearly two-hundred pages of his fantastic 6x6 images shot on the streets of Tokyo. This book is exquisitely produced and simply not to be missed. Seeing as how his Ariphoto series zines sell out in two weeks it is very likely that copies of this book will go quickly as well. Aoyama

When: May 28 - June 8, 2016

In the early 1970′s photographer Kazuo Kitai and his friend Yoshihara Tsuge, an underground manga artist, made several meandering trips together into the still-rough Japanese countryside. Nagarekumo Tabi (lit. “wandering cloud travels”) is a collection of Kitai’s pictures of their travels. Lacking anything but a vague destination but having theor cameras and film, these men (and sometimes Tsuge’s wife) photographed their encoutners with villagers, children, onsen-guests, and rural kabuki plays.

The exhibition features his vintage 8x10 prints- all smartly presented in plain wooden frames. Kitai’s distinctive handwriting denotes places and events- and often includes his signature. He’s one of the only photographers I am aware of who signs prints on the front side.

Nagarekumo Tabi can also be viewed as a photobook, recently published by WIDES publishing. It’s a great little book- well balanced, unpretentious, and at 2300 yen, quite affordable. The book is bilingual as well- It was an honor and a pleasure to have been asked to translate Kitai’s friendly text into English.

It’s interesting to experience these pictures in 2016- travels like these weren’t done for any other reason than a simple desire to get out there and take some photographs. Indeed, there’s a rough charm to these pictures that is absent in the filtered kind of Kinfolky achingly-authentic vibe that everyone’s set on now- it’s as if people photograph and digitally present their experiences today in a way to conform to an agreed on ideal rather than a true personal experience. Kitai’s saying “Look at this!” where the current cry is “Look at me! I did this too!”. There’s an honesty in Kitai’s pictures. Perhaps “authenticity” now, like the rich blacks in his contrasty prints, is something that people now view as a tool, a digital camera menu option- just another part of technique to accomplish a goal.

Nobuyoshi Araki opening reception, Taka Ishii Gallery,...

Nobuyoshi Araki opening reception, Taka Ishii Gallery, Roppongi

Leica M4-M with 35mm f2 Summicron lens

Nobuyoshi Araki opening reception, Taka Ishii Gallery,...

Nobuyoshi Araki opening reception, Taka Ishii Gallery, Roppongi

Canon Demi S

Photographer / Stylist: Demi Demu / instagram way. Seeing all the frames is a step back for a better view- what’s incredible is how with three or nine or 70 or all 653 images essence of the feeling of the work remains. I think that this hum that Sentimental Journey gives out- something that reverberates within the viewer, is a testament and even reason to it’s never-ending popularity.

A folio of these contact sheets- produced in a very limited edition of 10- is available. The other way to see each contact sheet (reproduced very close to their original size) is to pick up the February 2015 issue of SWITCH magazine.

Despite the fact that IMA Concept Store’s cafe/bookshop has been closed for over a year now, for this show a special display of Araki photobooks is on display- on a large table sits many of his books- most are for sale but all are there to be seen and experienced in person. I highly suggest taking hope a copy of the 2016 reprint exhibition of new work coinciding with his birthday- (see TCS: 2015 / 2014 / 2013 ). Interestingly, for two of the years film format played a role- For his 67th birthday Taka Ishii gallery presented 67 Shoots Back shot on 6x7 and two years later, 69 YK, all shot on 6x9 Fuji rangefinders.

Photo-Mad Old Man A, 76th Birthday, plays with the numbers- for year 76, all images in the show were shot in 6x7. In addition to nine color images, this exhibition features some four-hundred and seventy-one 8x10s* taped to the walls, all from the photographer’s current series, Tombeau Tokyo- it’s a luridly comical collection of images ranging from his muse KaoRi to views of Tokyo to a private world inhabited by a bizarre collection of flowers and dolls- a dark humor pervades his self-proclaimed paradise. (Part of this series can be seen at his exhibition at Musée Guimet in Paris as well as a recent publication from SWITCH publishing: Tombeau Tokyo). For the exhibition a new photobook, some 520 pages, has been published- it’s limited to 500 copies, all signed and numbered by Araki himself.

Since the best kind of Araki is simply “more Araki”, being surrounded in the gallery by several hundred prints is an experience that shouldn’t be missed- the connections between the prints- ties made through history of all kinds and connections across time made me feel as if I was walking through an invisible spider web- there’s a sensation of each picture reaching out to all other pictures in the room.

The opening reception/birthday party was, being open to the public and announced online, packed with well wishers and fans. After a few songs by the band Pathos, Araki thanked everyone for coming, and said that he’s planning on being back next year.

- - -

*Since this is Tokyo Camera Style, most of the black and white work was done with one of his Pentax 67s, and non-tripod supported pictures were shot with a Fujifilm GF670W, a 55mm rangefinder (this camera appears in a reflection in a window in a few prints). I’ve been told that Araki is mostly using Kodak T-Max 400 film.
