# telert – Alerts for Your Terminal (Telegram, Teams, Slack, Audio, Desktop)

**Version 0.1.13** 📱

Telert is a lightweight utility that sends notifications to Telegram, Microsoft Teams, Slack, plays audio alerts, or shows desktop notifications when your terminal commands or Python code completes. Perfect for long-running tasks, remote servers, CI pipelines, or monitoring critical code.

## 🤖 Quick Setup Guide

Telert supports multiple notification services. Choose one or more based on your needs:

### Telegram Setup

Telegram is the original and most fully featured provider for Telert. It uses official Bot API with reliable delivery.

1. **Create Bot**: Chat with `@BotFather` in Telegram, send `/newbot`, follow prompts and save your token
2. **Initialize**: Send any message to your new bot
3. **Get Chat ID**: Run `curl -s "https://api.telegram.org/bot<YOUR_TOKEN>/getUpdates"` and find your chat ID
4. **Configure**:

### Microsoft Teams Setup

Teams integration uses Power Automate (Microsoft Flow) to deliver notifications to any Teams channel.

1. **Create Flow**: Use Power Automate to create an HTTP trigger flow that posts to Teams
2. **Configure**:

### Slack Setup

Slack integration uses incoming webhooks to deliver notifications to channels or direct messages.

1. **Create Webhook**: Create app at api.slack.com → Incoming Webhooks → Add to Workspace
2. **Configure**:

### Audio Alerts Setup

Play a sound notification when your command completes.

# Basic installation
pip install telert

# Install with audio dependencies (optional, for playsound support)
pip install telert[audio]

# Configure with default sound (uses platform-specific audio players)

# Or with custom sound file

Audio notifications work on:
- **macOS**: Uses built-in `afplay` command (supports MP3 and WAV)
- **Linux**: Tries `mpg123` (for MP3s), `paplay` (PulseAudio), or `aplay` (ALSA)
- **Windows**: 
  - For WAV files: Uses built-in `winsound` module
  - For MP3 files: Tries `playsound` library (install with `pip install telert[audio]`)

Telert includes a built-in MP3 notification sound, so you don't need to provide your own sound file.

### Desktop Notifications Setup

Show notifications in your operating system's notification center.

Desktop notifications work on:
- **macOS**: Uses AppleScript
- **Linux**: Uses `notify-send` (install with `sudo apt install libnotify-bin` on Debian/Ubuntu)
- **Windows**: Uses PowerShell on Windows 10+

Telert includes a built-in notification icon, so you don't need to provide your own icon.

### Managing Multiple Providers

Telert lets you configure multiple providers and set one as default:

## 📋 Usage Guide

### Command Line Interface (CLI)

> **Note**: When using the `run` command, do not use double dashes (`--`) to separate telert options from the command to run. The correct syntax is `telert run [options] command`, not `telert run [options] -- command`.

#### Run Mode
Wrap any command to receive a notification when it completes:

```bash
# Basic usage - notify when command finishes (uses default provider)
telert run npm run build

# Add a descriptive label
telert run --label "DB Backup" pg_dump -U postgres mydb > backup.sql

# Show notification only when a command fails
telert run --only-fail rsync -av /src/ /backup/

# Send to a specific provider
telert run --provider teams --label "ML Training" python train_model.py

# Custom notification message
telert run --message "Training complete! 🎉" python train_model.py

# Run in silent mode (output only in notification, not displayed in terminal)
TELERT_SILENT=1 telert run python long_process.py

Command output is shown in real-time by default. Use `TELERT_SILENT=1` environment variable if you want to capture output for the notification but not display it in the terminal.

#### Filter Mode
Perfect for adding notifications to existing pipelines:

# Process and notify with specific provider

> **Note:** In filter mode, the exit status is not captured since commands in a pipeline run in separate processes.
> For exit status tracking, use Run mode or add explicit status checking in your script.

#### Send Mode
Send custom messages from scripts to any provider:

### Using Shell Built-ins with telert

When using `telert run` with shell built-in commands like `source`, you'll need to wrap them in a bash call:

For convenience, we provide a wrapper script that automatically handles shell built-ins:

Using environment variables is especially useful in CI/CD pipelines or containerized environments where you don't want to create a config file. When multiple provider environment variables are set, telert will try them in this order: Telegram, Teams, Slack, Audio, Desktop.

### Releasing to PyPI

The project is automatically published to PyPI when a new GitHub release is created:

1. Update version in both `pyproject.toml` and `telert/__init__.py`
2. Commit the changes and push to main
3. Create a new GitHub release with a tag like `v0.1.3`
4. The GitHub Actions workflow will automatically build and publish to PyPI

To manually publish to PyPI if needed:
