![Hawaii Disco Demo](docs/demo.gif)

Hawaii Disco is a terminal RSS reader that doesn't just show you articles — it reads alongside you. With built-in AI, it generates sharp insights, translates foreign articles, and analyzes your bookmark patterns, turning passive reading into active discovery.

---

## Why Hawaii Disco?

Most RSS readers stop at delivering headlines. Hawaii Disco goes further:

- **Read an article** and instantly get an AI-generated insight on why it matters
- **Hit `t`** and the full article is translated into your language
- **Bookmark a few articles** and AI finds the common threads across your interests
- **Tag and organize** your bookmarks with custom tags for easy retrieval
- **Sync to Obsidian** — bookmarked articles auto-save as Obsidian notes with frontmatter and tags
- **Import/export OPML** — migrate feeds from any RSS reader
- **All in your terminal** — no browser tabs, no distractions, just you and the content

It works great as a plain RSS reader too. AI features are optional and activate only when you ask.

---

## Features

- **Terminal-native** — Built on [Textual](https://github.com/Textualize/textual), vim-style keybindings
- **AI Insights** — One-keystroke article analysis: why it matters, what to watch out for
- **Translation** — Translate titles, descriptions, and full article bodies
- **Bookmark & Memo** — Save articles with personal notes, exported as Markdown
- **Tagging** — Add custom tags to bookmarks, browse by tag
- **Bookmark Analysis** — AI finds patterns and themes across your saved articles
- **Obsidian Integration** — Auto-save bookmarks as Obsidian notes with YAML frontmatter and tags
- **OPML Import/Export** — Migrate feeds to and from other RSS readers
- **Multiple AI Providers** — Claude CLI, Anthropic API, OpenAI API (or none at all)
- **Theme Selection** — Switch between Textual themes
- **6 Languages** — English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Spanish, German

## Installation

### pipx (Recommended)

[pipx](https://pipx.pypa.io/) installs CLI tools in isolated environments — no virtualenv setup needed:

```bash
pipx install hawaiidisco
```

To enable AI features with a specific provider:

```bash
pipx install "hawaiidisco[anthropic]"   # Claude API
pipx install "hawaiidisco[openai]"      # OpenAI API
pipx install "hawaiidisco[all]"         # All providers
```

### pip

```bash
pip install hawaiidisco
# With AI provider extras
pip install hawaiidisco[anthropic]
pip install hawaiidisco[openai]
pip install hawaiidisco[all]
```

### From Source

```bash
git clone https://github.com/ongyjho/hawaiidisco.git
cd hawaiidisco
python -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
pip install -e ".[all]"
```

---

## Quick Start

```bash
hawaiidisco
```

On first launch, a default config is created at `~/.config/hawaiidisco/config.yml` with sample feeds.

---

## Configuration

Edit `~/.config/hawaiidisco/config.yml`:

```yaml
# Language: en | ko | ja | zh_CN | es | de
language: en
# Theme (any Textual built-in theme)
theme: textual-dark
# AI provider configuration
ai:
  provider: claude_cli   # claude_cli | anthropic | openai
  api_key: ""            # Leave empty to use environment variable
  model: ""              # Leave empty for provider default
# RSS feed list
feeds:
  - url: https://hnrss.org/frontpage
    name: HackerNews
  - url: https://feeds.feedburner.com/geeknews-feed
    name: GeekNews
# Refresh interval in minutes
refresh_interval: 30
# AI insight settings
insight:
  enabled: true
  mode: manual           # auto | manual
# Bookmark export path
bookmark_dir: ~/.local/share/hawaiidisco/bookmarks
# Obsidian vault integration
obsidian:
  enabled: false
  vault_path: ~/Documents/MyVault
  folder: hawaii-disco       # Subfolder inside the vault
  template: default          # default | minimal
  auto_save: true            # Auto-save on bookmark
  include_insight: true      # Include AI insight in notes
  include_translation: true  # Include translations in notes
  tags_prefix: hawaiidisco   # Tag prefix for hierarchical tags
```

### AI Providers

Hawaii Disco works without AI — but it shines with it. Pick any provider:

| Provider | Install | Config | Note |
|----------|---------|--------|------|
| Claude CLI | Install [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code) | `provider: claude_cli` | Default, no API key needed |
| Anthropic API | `pip install hawaiidisco[anthropic]` | `provider: anthropic` | API key required |
| OpenAI API | `pip install hawaiidisco[openai]` | `provider: openai` | API key required |

Setting API keys:

```bash
# Environment variables
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-...
export OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...
```

```yaml
# Or reference env vars in config.yml
ai:
  provider: anthropic
  api_key: ${ANTHROPIC_API_KEY}
```

### OPML Import/Export

Migrate your feeds from any RSS reader:

```
Shift+I   Import feeds from an OPML file
Shift+E   Export current feeds to OPML
```

## Obsidian Integration

Hawaii Disco can automatically save bookmarked articles as Obsidian-compatible Markdown notes in your vault. Each note includes YAML frontmatter, AI insights, translations, and your personal memos.

### Setup

1. Enable in `config.yml`:

```yaml
obsidian:
  enabled: true
  vault_path: ~/Documents/MyVault   # Your Obsidian vault path
  folder: hawaii-disco               # Subfolder for saved articles
  tags_prefix: hawaiidisco           # Prefix for hierarchical tags
```

2. Press `S` on any bookmarked article to save it to your vault, or set `auto_save: true` to save automatically on bookmark.

### Note Format

Notes are saved to `vault_path/folder/feed_name/YYYY-MM-DD_slug.md` with this structure:

```markdown
---
title: "Article Title"
source: https://example.com/article
feed: HackerNews
date: 2025-01-15
tags:
  - hawaiidisco
  - hawaiidisco/hackernews
  - hawaiidisco/your-custom-tag
created_by: hawaiidisco
---
# Article Title
## Summary
Article description...
## AI Insight
AI-generated insight about the article...
## Translation
Translated content (if available)...
## My Notes
Your personal memo...
---
*Saved from Hawaii Disco on 2025-01-15*
*Original: [Article Title](https://example.com/article)*
```

### Features

- **Smart merging** — Updating a note preserves your existing "My Notes" section
- **Conditional sections** — AI Insight and Translation sections only appear when content is available
- **Hierarchical tags** — Tags follow `prefix/category` format for easy filtering in Obsidian
- **Custom tags** — Tags you add to bookmarks (`c` key) are included in the note's frontmatter

### Tips

- Use Obsidian's **tag pane** or **Dataview plugin** to browse articles by feed, date, or custom tags
- Set `include_insight: false` or `include_translation: false` to keep notes minimal
- The `minimal` template option creates shorter notes without section headers

---

## Notion Integration

Hawaii Disco doesn't have a direct Notion API integration, but you can easily sync your bookmarked articles to Notion through two approaches:

### Option 1: Via Obsidian (Recommended)

Use Hawaii Disco's Obsidian integration together with a Notion sync tool:

1. Enable Obsidian integration in Hawaii Disco (see above)
2. Install the [Notion to Obsidian](https://github.com/NotionX/notion-to-obsidian) converter or use [Obsidian Web Clipper](https://obsidian.md/clipper) in reverse — or use a sync tool like **[makemd](https://www.makemd.com/)** that bridges Obsidian and Notion
3. Your Hawaii Disco bookmarks flow: **Hawaii Disco → Obsidian vault → Notion**

### Option 2: Via Bookmark Markdown Files

Hawaii Disco exports all bookmarks as Markdown files. You can import these into Notion:

1. Bookmarks are saved to `~/.local/share/hawaiidisco/bookmarks/` as `.md` files
2. In Notion, use **Import → Markdown** to bring in your bookmark files
3. For automation, use tools like [md2notion](https://github.com/Cobertos/md2notion) or the Notion API to programmatically sync the bookmark directory

### Option 3: Notion API Script

For advanced users, write a script that reads Hawaii Disco's SQLite database directly:

```python
# Example: read bookmarks from Hawaii Disco's database
import sqlite3
from pathlib import Path
db_path = Path("~/.local/share/hawaiidisco/hawaiidisco.db").expanduser()
conn = sqlite3.connect(db_path)
bookmarks = conn.execute("""
    SELECT a.title, a.link, a.description, a.insight, a.feed_name,
           b.memo, b.tags, b.bookmarked_at
    FROM bookmarks b
    JOIN articles a ON a.id = b.article_id
    ORDER BY b.bookmarked_at DESC
""").fetchall()
# Then use the Notion SDK to create pages:
# pip install notion-client
# from notion_client import Client
# notion = Client(auth="your-integration-token")
# ... create pages in your Notion database
```

This gives you full control over what data flows into Notion, including AI insights, translations, and custom tags.

### Adding a Custom AI Provider

Implement the `AIProvider` Protocol:

```python
from hawaiidisco.ai.base import AIProvider
class MyProvider:
    def generate(self, prompt: str, *, timeout: int = 30) -> str | None:
        ...
    def is_available(self) -> bool:
        ...
    @property
    def name(self) -> str:
        return "my_provider"
```

---

## Development

```
### Test
```bash
pytest -v
```
### Lint
```bash
